Now We're Ready To Move Ourselves...

Last month I talked about being on the helping end of someone else's move. This month we're putting our house on the market and are beginning the search ourselves. This will be like a journal as I list the things we've done to make this a smoother adventure for us.

We've talked off and on for several years about a new house in the same area. I never could figure out why folks did that but now I think I know. We need a change in our lives. I've taking up quilting and I can barely get into my room that holds my passions for quilts and computers. I need to be able to spread out.

a. Could we remodel? Yes but why not start out fresh.

b. What do we want in a new home? Lets make a list of minimum requirements and then a "it would be great to have list" to go along with it.

c. Consider such things as location, where we will not live, (I put one little town on the "will not live" list because of their phone system. We knew we couldn't get the current great rates we have if we go to their small system.) We wanted a smaller yard. Our lifestyle is such that we don't want to spend a lot of time with yard maintenance. Condo sounded right to me (being from California originally, I've seen some perfect condos) but condos can't be found here. How many bedrooms, need a pantry, what about a fenced yard? You get the picture. Go into this with some ideas of what you're looking for. This saves time and effort for both you and the Realtor.

d. Give it to the Realtor and let them know not to show us anything if it doesn't meet the initial criteria.

e. Grab the "Home" book and start circling home that strike our fancy.

f. Set an appointment with the Realtor to start seeing houses.

We did all this and spent an entire day looking. Found things we liked about the house or yard but then other things we chose not to live with so we moved from one house to the other. The thought of a new 15-year mortgage just made me cringe when mine is paid off in 5 years, or less if we make some smart decisions financially.

We felt completely organized and ready for the day. By the end of the day we were disappointed and tired but still organized. We knew what we'd hoped to find and what we didn't find. We began the thought process once again. What do we really want to do?
