Organize Your Desk (Cubicle)

I'm sitting here looking at my desk and thought I'd share some thoughts on how to organize your desk (cubicle in my case). As I walk through the building I see several examples of what would drive me nuts and surely don't understand how anyone can work in those conditions. But to each their own..... I'm all for having some personal items in my workspace but when you have more personal than work items something is unbalanced. Then there are those spaces that seldom look like anyone is ever there.

One great item I've found since I started work here is the post-it bulletin boards. They velcro easily to the cubicles and I just add those papers I need to see all the time to them. They are up and out of the piles I hate digging through and are easy to read and get to for changes. They work on the same concept of the post-it pads.....paper sticks to it, no tape, and no tacks. It's a great product and can be bought at most office supply stores.

I would recommend keeping all those little nick knacks to a minimum. Once someone worked here who had every sort of nick knack in every corner and on every shelf of her cubicle. It looked cluttered and would be too much of a distraction for me. For some reason magnets from all over grace the overhead cubicle lights in many cubicles here. Again too distracting for me. I'm here to work (I'm on a break at the moment) and don't need distractions surrounding me. I do have three family pictures up and off the desk surface. Actually, as I look around, the few personal items I have are mostly where I can see them but they're up off the desk surface.

I often just look around to see how I can better utilize my limited space. I recently took on an additional responsibility, which meant I'd need more room for the new items and materials I use. With the new responsibility came a new file cabinet which fortunately sits with many others in a central filing area. I don't have to get into it often so this is convenient enough. I keep the things I use on a regular basis near and the things I don't use as often up and out of the way.

I'm willing to bet, and I'm not a betting person, that you're sitting at some sort of desk reading this right now. Take a look around ...... what can you do to make it more efficient for yourself. Try something new and if it doesn't feel right, try something different. Just keep working with it until it works for you. Find your own style and work with it. I'm always in a mood for a change, even if it's a little change. Even a little change can make a big difference in your environment.
