More storage solutions….

Hopefully last months article got you going with some workable storage solutions for your life. I'm going to look at more storage solutions this month.

Stephanie Winston in her "Best Organizing Tips" book states "In many cases, overcrowding is the result of poorly organized space rather that insufficient space. You know it's there but just can't find it." Do either of these statements sound like you? You may have plenty of storage but if you're using in inefficiently then it's wasted space. This could also be costly because you may be purchasing all versions of storage items you really don't need. A little rearranging may do the trick.

Right now sitting here in my office/sewing room I'm looking at one four drawer filing cabinet and two two drawer cabinets. I know they are filled with various items from previous interests. Over time those interests have changed. My 30" x 60" cabinet is also filled with several items I probably no longer need to keep in there. I have books from my masters program, computer paper, software boxes and just LOTS of other things I don't use on a regular basis right now. Look around your home........... what do you have that you've filled with things that are no longer as useful as they were when you first put them there?

I have the top shelves in closets (those no one ever uses or those we stuff with items we never use) that could easily hold some of these things I want to keep but don't plan to use anytime soon. Just my moving less used items to a location out-of-the way will open up good useful space for my new/currents interest. While making the move I may even decide to consolidate those computer software boxes or just toss them and put all the miscellaneous things in them in one shoebox or something similar. There may be other things I can just get rid of.

Still need space? Lets look as what else we can find. I'll toss out some thoughts and hopefully it will spark some creative ideas for you. I'm a quilter and my material stash (that's what we buy and trade for just because we love it) is growing by leaps and bounds. Hanging items is another way to gain some space. I could hang my material on pant hangers in a closet http://www.stacksandstacks.com/20244.htm where when I look in I can see it all at a glance. Also I could buy a portable wardrobe rack http://www.stacksandstacks.com/cl_garmen... to hang the material, but then you could have wasted floor space. If you purchase one with a small rack at the bottom you could stack clear boxes on them. They also come with racks on top to store more boxes. What about putting two moldings, which you can hang a basic rod on, right on the wall. Add that rod and hang your material right in plain sight. Personally, I like the appearance of neatness even if behind the doors it's not quite that way so this particular idea won't work for me but maybe it's something you can use. Several towel racks put up behind doors (where no other things seems to fit) would hold lots of folder material making it easy to see at a glance.
