Fresh Start to Getting Organized

The old year is just about over and 2001 was not a good year for many of us. Tomorrow we can start over with a clean slate. We can set up new systems, start practicing good time management and begin to get our houses in order. Sound good? It is possible as long as we don't try to do it all in a day.

One of the main reasons for poor organizational skills is a lack of awareness of how to get and stay organized. Maybe you grew up in a home where things were not well organized. Then again, some people are more obviously organized than others. We all have a 'style'. If you are happy with yours, that's great, if you are not, then you'll want to work toward changing your style.

The second reason many people can't get to where they feel in control and organized is due to poor health, Don't neglect your health. You don't have to be an athlete, but you do need to get a bit of exercise, eat properly and get your rest. Things are always harder when you are tired. Schedule an appointment with your doctor in January for a complete check-up.

If you like to make New Year's Resolutions but have never seen them through January, it's likely because you were not being realistic in your expectations of yourself. Certainly, plan a few new goals or set up a system to change some aspect of your household management, but don't take on too much all at once.

Begin with a resolution a month. That way you can have twelve goals or resolutions but each only lasts one month and you only do them as the months arrive. You can set a few personal goals to work on alongside these too. Plan them month by month too if that is reasonable.

This plan is a sample only to give you a starting point in developing your own plan. You may want to coordinate your tasks. For instance, you may want to wash curtains and do windows during the same month. Do what makes life easier for you.

You may want to do walls first then do pictures and photos during the same month spelling off the heavier work with the lighter work of doing the pictures. Word of warning: Picture organizing (like books) tends to be time consuming because you will be reminiscing while you do it.
