Back To School Organizing Tips

Yes, it's time to get ready for school again. Some parents are counting the hours ready for the big day when they will finally have the house to themselves, and others are sad to see the little ones taking those first steps away from home.

I always enjoyed having the kids home for the summer, but I confess to a bit of a private coffee party with appropriate cheers after waving them off on the school bus that first school day in September. I did try to limit my jumping up and down to the privacy of my home, but then again I had a large family and I am a person who likes my 'alone' time. :)

I liked the structure that having the kids in school added to my days. I found I got a lot more accomplished when I knew I only had three hours in the morning for chores and errands. I tried to get most of my housework done in the morning and saved the rest of the day for special chores or outings and the evenings for the kids and my own interests, like reading, once they were in bed.

Raising a large family was fun, I often look back and wonder how I did it all, my house seemed tidier then than it does now with just two of us at home. Everyone had jobs to do around the house and I arranged things to help make routine tasks easier. Here are some of the things we found that helped keep our busy family organized.

School books, bags and sports equipment.

Designate one place for these things. We had a mud room at the back door where each child had a peg for his coat, two small, deep shelves under it for boots and the book bag went either on top of the shelf or hung over the coat. There was a parson' bench there where the seat lifted up for them to store mitts and hats or odds and ends like small balls and whatever little things they took to school with them to play with at recess.

You may not have a lot of room but try to set aside one area where all the outdoor clothing and boots etc can be kept then there is no hunting in the morning.

Lunches

I did a weekly shopping with a plan for lunches. I did this in self defense as I hate making lunches and found it much easier when I planned it out and made up things ahead of time.
