Stressors You Hope No One Finds Out About

© Judy Brown

Preparing to get organized involves changing your attitude. It means sitting down and figuring out what you can get rid of and how to take care of what you keep. This not only applies to your office supplies, household goods and cleaning systems but to your thoughts and actions in other areas as well.

Being organized means finding time for the things you want to do to work towards your life goals or purpose. It means having peace of mind knowing that the monthly bill payments have been made, that you are not going further into debt just to get more possessions to clutter up the house. It means knowing where things are and making the best of what you have. It also means getting rid of attitudes and actions that rob you of your peace of mind. Everyone has a set of values that they live by.

Sometimes we stray from those values because, "Just this once no one will know." But someone does know - you know - and it is when we stray out of our comfort zone created by our value system, that we create stress that affects us in ways we may not fully realize.

Sometimes we sabotage ourselves by doing things that guarantee we will be tense, feel guilty, or break the law. All these things are avoidable - if we realize we are doing them and then make a decision not to do them. When we make a decision to stop doing the things that we are responsible for that create stress it paves the way to making bigger changes in our lives.

Do You Do This?

Stressor: Speeding in traffic.

You speed on the highway or around town because you want to make sure you aren't going to be late - again! While you do this you are furtively glancing around to see if there is a police car in the area. Your heart races just a bit faster if you glimpse that telltale car behind you. If you manage to avoid getting stopped, you reach your destination only a few minutes ahead of time or you arrive late anyway, and you have put yourself through a lot of stress for nothing.

Solution to this stressor: Make a promise to yourself not to speed. Leave the house a few minutes earlier so you will arrive on time or get where you are going early. Try setting your watch ten minutes ahead to fool yourself into being on time or to arrive early until this gets to be a habit. Don't speed Make this a new rule that you follow faithfully- speeding sets a bad example for your children and can cost you money, or, ultimately, the loss of your drivers license. Is rushing to get somewhere really worth the stress of speeding?
