Organizing Your Linens

The linen closet tends to be one area that is easily overlooked; but is one of the easiest cupboards to organize. What could be simpler than having a separate shelf for bed linens, bath towels and kitchen linens?

Well this is okay if you have an actual linen cupboard; but if you don't have one built in, it gets a bit trickier.

When You Don't Have A Linen Closet

If you don't have a central closet you can use specifically for your linens it is nice if you can store the bedding in the bedroom where it will be used. What if you have a small bedroom? How many sheets do you need. One for the bed, and one in reserve is the minimum I recommend. This is one area where I think you should splurge.

Instead of using mismatched sheets and pillow cases, look for sales and get two nice sets for each bed. January is the month for the best of the bedding and linen sales; but if you go shopping on the last day of the month there are often in-store un-dvertised specials as the department stores are restocking and getting rid of older stock to make room for the new.

How many pillow cases do you really need? If you have your two sets that go with your sheet sets, you may want to have a few extra pairs. If you have patterned sheets and pillowcases buy a couple of extra sets of pillowcases in a matching solid color. Store the sheets inside one of the pillow cases and slip the extra pillow slips in there too.

Consider getting rid of your blankets in favor of a duvet. This is a feather (or acrylic) filled comforter with a removable washable cover. They come in all standard sizes so you can use them for any size bed. All you really need is a bottom sheet and your duvet. Bed making is a snap as you just fluff it up in the morning, straighten it out, and voila your bed is made!

If your bed is free-tanding and there is room underneath, you can store extra quilts and blankets plus your extra sheet set there. You can buy basket containers in all shapes and sizes, this will work well. If you like to shop the thrift shops, look for heavy duty garment (travel) bags they are excellent extra storage covers. They zip up and are easily slipped under the bed as they lie fairly flat.
