Birth of the Russian MafiaBirth of the Russian Mafia With the fall of the Soviet Union it was apparent that the world would never be the same again. The change also extended into the world of organized crime. As it became clear that the control of the government was in decline throughout the Soviet Union meetings were called of the leaders of Russian organized crime to discuss their future after the fall of the government. The oppression of the Communist party had aided in the creation of an underworld organization that was able to function in the shadows in a very efficient manner. A world of crime often referred to as “The Thieves World” had been born even before the Czar had been removed from power and Lenin was able to gain control of the government. This world was able to maintain itself and even expand through one revolution and with the fall of the Soviets, in the near future, they were putting plans into motion to survive another one. They felt that the lessons of Russian history had made it clear that while governments may come and go, “The Thieves World” would continue to survive. It was apparent that if the economic system was to shift from government controlled socialism to more liberal forms of capitalism they would be ready to move into any areas through which they could make a profit. They were confident toward the future since their experiences under the violence of the Czars and Communists had taught them how to organize their own system of violence allowing for infiltration into positions of power.
