Dutch - Keeping the Old Ways During Changing TimesDutch- Keeping the Old Ways During Changing Times There was a time when one man was able to standup against the rising power of the Organization created by Luciano. There was a time when one man attempted to maintain the use of violence to achieve his goals while the Organization was moving toward more business like means to gain and maintain higher levels of power. There was also a time when an independent felt his use of violence would sustain him in conflicts with the law and the Organization, both at the same time. And the time would arrive when his chosen way of utilizing violence to gain his ends would lead to his own destruction. The individual that tried to bring the old ways of during business into the changing world of organized crime was Dutch Schultz. The rising lords of crime - Costello, Lansky, and Luciano - were seeking a new approach to crime that limited violence as a means to solve problems. But Shultz was unable to break from the past and attempted to bring the old approach of displaying violence or the threat of violence into this same world of crime. His conflicts with the law and with new leaders of crime would lead to his downfall. But he would not go out without a fight against both factions. While his time may have passed he had no intention of just fading away. He would gain the reputation of becoming an outlaw among outlaws. And the Wild West approach to business and solving problems he followed would lead him to the same fate as many of the outlaws of the old west. There was no room for cowboys any more and he that lived by the gun would go to his death the same way. Not being an Italian, he would never rise to the higher orders of the Organization. While he was viewed as a force to be reckoned with. His control of beer and the numbers in New York brought him millions of dollars and power throughout sections of New York and New Jersey. Yet he was never ever to rise above the lust for violence like some many of his associates. Like the dinosaurs of the past he was unable to adjust to a world that was rapidly changing. His time had come and gone and he realized too late that his lack of adjustment would call for his removal, one way or another.
