A Crack in the Kray Dam

The twins were constantly attempting to gain a cut from the Richardson brother's control of parking scams at the Heathrow Airport. The Richardson's refused to give in to any of the Twins demands and in more than one case stood up against Kray threats. Ronnie, in particular was in a rage about the defiance of the Richardson Gang and felt compelled to prove that their level of violence was no match for his own. When a cousin of the Kray's was killed by one of the Richardson group, Ronnie swore revenge and set out to even the score. In a local pub, Ronnie calmly walked a cross the crowed room pulled out a pistol and shot one of the captains of the Richardson Gang in the head. Ronnie then just as calmly walked out the door. Ronnie made it clear that the killing was really to prove the honor of the Kray group and to prove their lack of fear in the face of the Richardson Gang.

Attempting to allow things to cool of the Krays left the country for North Africa. After a short time in that region the twins were thrown out of the country due to their reputation. By this time Ronnie had begun to slip off the deep end once again. Reggie was forced to assume the role of gang leader, even though he had problems of his own in relation to his marriage. The growing rift between Reggie and his wife finally climaxed with her death due to an overdose of sleeping tablets. Now it was Reggie who fell into deep depression and began to use drink and drugs to escape from the harshness of reality. Reggie even began to turn more and more toward the use of violence to express his grief. A series of confrontations involving Reggie left enemies and in some cases gang members with bullet wounds and scared faces. Ronnie was forced to assume control of the gang's day by day operations and put up with Reggie's grieving. However, what upset Ronnie the most was Reggie's reluctance to go all the way a kill someone. Finally after constant badgering Ronnie used a butcher knife to carry out the deed and enter the world that Ronnie had created for the firm.

During this same time period the police began a plan to bring an end to the reign of the Krays. A detective Read was placed in charge of the case and promised to turn over every stone in an effort to bring the twins to justice. He soon found the task to be more difficult than he imagined since witness had a tendency to either disappear or have a memory problem when called in for testimony. Time and time again Read felt he had come up with a plan only to have it fall apart before the Krays could be convicted of a crime. Read was not one to give up and began to collect a history of the Kray twins, including a list of the people they had dealing with. He was convinced that out of that group he would find someone willing to talk. At first he hit a brick wall because all of the people he contacted were quick to point out that the fear of the twins was enough to keep their mouths shut. They pointed to people in the past that had crossed the twins and no desire to face the same fate. Finally Read found the weak link he was looking for and used that same fear to convince the informer to spills the beans about the twins. The twins were aware of what the police were up to and cut down on their criminal activities to try and turn down the heat. Meanwhile Read was traveling throughout Europe collecting more information and lining up potential witnesses. The noose was beginning to be placed around each of the twin's neck.
