An attempt was made to hide Ronnie in the countryside, but he would not settle for such a simple plan. He would venture back to the Eastside and travel among the clubs he had known in the past. For protection against the police he played the role of being his own brother. He even went out of his way to parade himself in front of the police when the occasion arose. He so terrified the owner of the farm where he was staying that arrangements were made for Ronnie to make a medical visit. The visit established the fact that Ronnie was suffering from advanced paranoid schizophrenia and the suggestion was made he must receive treatment before something out of control happened. Ronnie's own family made arrangements for the police to pick him up, allowing a continuation of treatment for his illness. He received the required treatment and was released from prison in 1959. He would never be the same again and his physical appearance had made it unlikly that he would ever pass an identical twin again.
Returning to the gang, Ronnie attempted to regain the control he held before his prison time. Disagreements arose between the brothers since Reggie wanted to keep things at a low profile while Ronnie wanted to become the leader of a city-wide organized crime group. After a period of time Reggie was sent to jail and Ronnie was able to assume his old leadership position. Ronnie's lack of ability to control things without the use of violence began to enter into a series of deals with one Peter Rachman, involving protection money centering on the real estate trade. Rachman attempted to take advantage of Ronnie in one of the deals. An action that proved to be a massive mistake for all parties involved.
