They Finally Get Gotti

They Finally Get Gotti

Gotti seemed to many like a man who could never be held for a crime. His reputation grew to a point in which he was seen more as public figure than a crime lord. He had survived a series of jury trails and an attempt on his life by a rival gang, Some of the people around him were sent off to prison, but Gotti continued to expand his business interests into ever increasing areas. Learning a lesson from his previous boss "Big Paul", he saw the potential to expand into the area of construction. He had the power to control the unions, the trucking, and prices of construction products. He even gained the support and following of a gang members with experience in the area of construction. Sammy Gravano was an excellent source of information related to the construction industry and also had a reputation as a killer.

Sammy had begun his life in crime with a rival crime Family but soon gained entrance into the Gambino Family and a connection with Gotti's crew. Sammy became a big earner for the Family and as Gotti moved up through the ranks Sammy moved along with him. In the beginning they did not have a close association, in fact Sammy did not care much for Gotti's style. But they both had an allegiance to the under-boss Dellacorce and a growing dislike for the leadership of Castellano. When Gotti began his plans to move against Castellano, he sought the support of Sammy for the venture. A man like Sammy who was smart and had what it takes to carry out hits was the type that Gotti needed for support. The two men worked out the plans for the hit on Castellano and according to testimony were in a car near the Sparks Steakhouse to view the hit and make sure Castellano was dead. When Gotti assumed control he chose Sammy to be one of his major underbosses. Gotti even made it clear that if anything happened to him, Sammy would be the man to take his place. The two men grew close and Gotti was becoming more and more impressed with Sammy's skills and abilities. The two men were very cautious about surveillance by federal authorities, and most conversations were held in areas where tapes could not be produced to be used against them for some crime. It was wise that they were so cautious since even the Ravenite Social Club, where they met on a regular basis had been bugged by agents.
