Reorganization: Mafia Style

With exit of Anastasia and with Genovese tucked away in prison, a scramble for power erupted in the Organization. Carlo Gambino, newly appointed to the Commission, was wise enough to realize it would be best to wait before attempting to gain even more power. Major competition was expected from the Families of Profaci and Bonanno. However, Profaci soon had problems within his own family that made a move for increased power unwise.

Joey Gallo and his crew had come to feel that they were not receiving a large enough share of the profits. After all Joey had served his masters well by taking an active role in the removal of Anastasia as a barrier to further expansion for the Family. Joey's crew had followed this bit of work up with more assignments for removal of obstacles to Family enrichment. Profaci turned the request down flat. Gallo's response was the kidnapping of Profaci's brother, brother-in-law, and two bodyguards. Gallo delivered the message that if Profaci wanted these men back a part of the empire must be shared with the Gallos. To this request Profaci agreed and the men were released unharmed. The Gallos then settled back to await their rewards. The request was not rewarded in the manner in which the Gallos had expected. Instead of monetary reward one of Gallo's main enforcers was murdered in a manner that sent a message to the Gallos from Profaci. This action was followed by an action similar to one acted out in Godfather II. Joey's brother was to receive one of the first reward payments in a bar and when he went to pick up the money a noose was placed around his neck cutting off his ability to breath. Just like in the Godfather scene, a policemen happened into the bar wondering what was taking place. A gunfight erupted between the attacker and the police allowing Gallo's brother to escape his fate. An all out war had broken out between Profaci and Gallo.

Profaci had overlooked the fact that "Crazy" Joey Gallo had not received his nickname as a joke or even good fun. The majority of the losses came from the Gallo Family. His crew had taken to the "Mattresses" and ventured from time to time into the city to look for some of Profaci's men. The major loss to both Families was in the form of their Bosses. Joey was arrested for making threats to a local businessman and Profaci fell ill with cancer that in a short period of time claimed his life. The war had just ground to a halt. However, from prison Gallo made it cleat that the war would be forced to a settlement when he was freed from jail. To keep all the parties happy the Gallos were taken back into the fold when they swore loyalty to the Profaci Family and did receive more power to make sure that loyalty was retained. The Gallos had gained a larger share of the profits, but the real winner was Joe Colombo. It was Colombo who would become the head of the Profaci Family. It was Colombo who had set up the peace terms with the Gallos. But Joey would never forget that Colombo had been loyal to Profaci, marking him as an enemy to Gallo.
