From time to time I receive requests related to books that offer background and information related to organized crime. I have listed here some books and reference materials that offer an excellent insight into organized crime and its history.

The Illustrated History of Organized Crime, by Richard Hammer. Courage Books

The book provides an extensive historical study of organized crime, centering on the development of the Mafia and its transportation to America. A well organized account of various periods and topical sidelights dealing with organized crime personalities.

Mafia: True Crime, Editors of Time Life Books, Time Life Books

The book traces the formation of the Mafia and its Americanization process that led to the end of the old guard and provided an opportunity for the creation of the Commission. Straightforward in the presentation of facts with excellent photos.

Mafia, by Joe Dorigo, Chartwell Books,Inc.

Material is well organized and presented in terms of specific topics. The highlight of the text is the extensive collection of photos dealing with individuals and specific events. The periods covered extend from the rise of the Mafia in Sicily to the period of John Gotti's control.

The Godfather Companion, by Peter Biskind, Harper Perennial

Provided is a collection of everything you wanted to know about all three of the Godfather movies. Provides information where wiseguys attempted to have life imitate art along with quotes that have become part of the American language. Reviews of alternate plot lines show how things could have been different for the Corleone family.

War of the Godfather, William F. Roemer, Jr., Ivy Books

Text deals with the confrontation between the Chicago and New York families for the control of Las Vegas. The families of Accardo and Bonanno move against one another with the city of Las Vegas as a backdrop. Material presents information related to the role of organized crime in Vegas and the control the mob once had over the entire city.

Blood and Honor, by George Anastasia, Zebra Books Kensington Publishing Corp.

The book deals with the changes that took place in the Philadelphia Mob following the murder of Family Don Angelo Bruno. It follows the transition from an organization based on traditions and concern for the good of the family to an organization based on fear and mistrust. The story line deals with the attempt to gain control of the gambling and other enterprises in Atlantic City under the leadership of Nicky Scarfo. The price of Scarfo's greed and lack of concern for family members culminates in the collapse of his family and a major setback for organized crime. Based on information provided by a federal informant who dealt with the situation during the transition period.
