In the heart of Asti Langa lies Mario and Gianfranco Torelli's Cascina Milano at Bubbio where grape varieties like Moscato and Dolcetto are grown using organic methodology. The Torelli's take great care not to damage the delicate natural equilibrium of the soil in the hills surrounding their property, and also have re-introduced elements of local tradition like dry stone walls, a precise rain-water drainage system, simple but distinctive rural building style and a warm, family environment in the nineteenth-centry stone and red-brick farmhouse.
For Mario, organic farming is a willing choice of life - he received from his father the clear, fertile land and intends to carry this on for his children. He is critical of those winemakers who just produce only 10% organic and 90% of conventional wines, and told me that large industries see Organic methodology as a threat. But little by little Italian consumers are drinking more biological wine for their health. Mario feels strongly about organic farming because he wants his daughter to be able to pick grapes and eat them without having to tell her "do not eat them!" (grapes sprayed with chemicals). Biologica is a way of life and working method for him. He knows that it is a quality product; organic compost is produced and used as fertilizer; a way of being close to one's own land and growing grapes typical of the region; ecologically it is better if organic. Even the deputy mayor of the city of Bubbio in Piemonte recommends biologico. Wines from Torelli include Piemonte Chardonnay, Moscato d'Asti "San Grod" and Dolcetto d'Asti. Torelli is part of the Trimillii, a group of winemakers from different parts of Italy including Piemonte and Tuscany, Monferrato, Bubbio, Firenze, Chianti and Asti. Supporting the creed that harmony in nature and an uncontaminated environment creates profound bonds between people who love and respect the land, themselves and each other. The word "Trimilli" was taken from a character out of ancient history - Tremelius referred to by the Latin writer Columella was the first historically-recorded vine-grower. Thus the Trimilli association was founded in 1995 and now they are happily producing great organic wines in small barrels, each one the yield of a combination of sun-blessed vineyards, organic vines and men whose hearts are filled with love and caring. The following make up the Trimillii Amici Viticoltori: Tracolle; Giovanni Viberti; Fratelli Rovero; Casina di Cornia; Erbaluna; Mario Torelli; Casavecchia alla Piazza; Cascina degli Ulivi Go To Page: 1
