Interviewing this passionate young man at the second International Organic Wine Expo in New York was indeed a pleasure and the following is the translation of our conversation.
Farming organically is a choice and Gianfranco Torelli, the owner of this fruitful vineyard, chose to continue working this way. From his father he received clear, fertile land and another choice of his is to pass on this land to his children and grandchildren in the pristine manner of his inheritance. Gianfanco is very critical of the winemakers who just produce 10% organically and the remaining 90% in conventional wines using chemicals, but still call their wines biologica. He told me that many large industries see the Organic wine business as a threat but little by little, the population in Italy is drinking more and more organic wines. His joy is to have his children able to pick grapes without his having to tell them ‘don’t eat them’ as happens so frequently when grapes are grown with chemicals and pesticides. Biologica is a way of life and working method for him and his family. He enumerates the positive aspects as: 1. quality produce 2. to be close to your own land and grow grapes typical of your region 3. ecologically better if organic 4. fertilizing with organic compost puts back into the earth as nature gives Wines produced are as follows: Moscato D’Asti “San Gro’d” – dessert wine Asti “Di Michela” – named after Gianfranco’s daughter and a quite delicious sparkling wine Piemonte “Di Paola” Dolcette D’Asti “Brico Rocchetto”Email address: vinitorelli@virgilio.it Website: www.trimillii.it Regione Bubbio, Piemonte, Italy Go To Page: 1
