Under the auspices of the Honorable Minister Giorgio Radicati, Consul General of Italy in New York and with the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West in collaboration with the Italian Wine and Food Institute, the second IOWE was held in New York City May 8 and 9, 2002. And what a gathering it was! With such heavy hitters as Robert Pinton, Lucio Caputo, members of Italian and local institutions – Regione Piemonte, PromoFirenze and CCIAA Modena, the Honorable Massimo Roscigno, Consul general of Italy in Los Angeles, press representatives, winemakers and an international panel of speakers, the impressive Symposium, tasting and judging of over 150 Italian organic wines and Gala Award dinner attracted both those who know and love Organic wines, those who are learning about them and those who realize that this is the future of winemaking.

I met many of the winemakers and, once again, was impressed with the level of their commitment to the health and well being not only of themselves and their families, but their children and children’s children. It was a great experience to interview a number of them and their stories will appear over the next months.

Subjects covering The Consumer’s Perception of Organic Wine - Past, Present and Future; Challenges and Opportunities in the U.S. Organic Wine Market – Importing and Marketing; Small-Scale Local Winegrowing in upstate-New York and the Slow Food/Organic Connubium gave the many attendees much food for thought.

At the specialized wine tasting held the last day, hundreds of restaurateurs, wine buyers, distributors and importers spent many hours tasting and choosing their favorites and hopefully will be bringing more and more of these wines for public consumption here in the U.S.A. Later that evening, the Grand Gala Award dinner took place and three of my favorite winemakers received acknowledgement through awards for their fine wines, notably, Fasoli Gino, Rovero and Torelli but more of that later!
