Further Adventures in Organic Winemaking


We discussed ‘Why Chemicals’ and I was told how multi-national companies offered money to use their chemicals. The 50’s and 60’s were a very poor time so many farmers and winemakers decided to receive subsidies from these chemical companies in exchange for using pesticides on their land. Many growers became not only wealthy but lazy since they no longer had to work so hard. However, many producers realized the lessening of the quality of their product, the soil typical to each region started disappearing and a sameness in the wine characteristic appeared.

AZIENDA AGRICO ‘MARINA SGUBIN’ – producing wine for over 300 years. Since 1950 all the family had terrible allergies from the chemicals used in the growing of grapes and they could no longer drink their own wines so it became important to change. Marina told me that at the beginning organic farming was very difficult and there were many problems, but the future of their children and the environment were most important and they persevered “doing what we can do”. Today Marina Sgubin is producing fine naturally produced wines which her family and consumers can enjoy with no adverse effects, and last year they brought out a new vintage
