Further Adventures in Organic Winemaking

Much information was gleaned at the recent International Organic Wine Expo and I continue writing about this. We must thank PierLuigi Biasiolo of the Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West who put so much time and effort into making the Expo such a grand success. Together with Alitalia Lines, the Italian Oral History Institute, Promo Firenze, Promec – CCIAA Modena, Regione Piemonte, Slow Food USA, The White Truffle Festival, Vin & Organic Products, and many Italian Wine Producers who flew in from Italy to participate in this great event.

I had the opportunity to interview a number of these Italian Winemakers and although my Italian is not very fluent and their English about the same, somehow we communicated very well. Due, I think, to our clear intention to speak and write from our hearts which always brings forth magic.

PERLAGE S.R.L. in Treviso – the three Nardi brothers who all have studied at such places as the Superior Institute of Enology in Conegliano and the University of Florence, combine their attention not only to technical and scientific development but since 1981, organic agricultural techniques are exclusively used in the creation of PERLAGE unique wines. When interviewing Ivo Nardi, he told me that they think about their own health and the need to preserve the environmental treasures of the world, thusly, nothing they are doing is touched by toxins. Now lots of friendly insects have come back to the vineyards, the grass is different and many flowers grow since they stopped using chemicals. The Eco-system is balanced and good insects, like ladybirds, fight bad insects and reduce spraying. Most of their wines are sold throughout Europe but here in the United States and Canada, we are receiving their first shipments.

ANTICA MASSERIA VENDITTI – since 1595 the familia Venditti has been making wine in Castelvenere. Nicola Venditti of the Azienda Agricola told me that the very first event is the winemaker himself drinking his own wine and being sure that his health and the health of family, friends and customers can only be enhanced. Nicola is interested in learning how wine production was in the past and how the last 30 years have brought the knowledge and quality of organic winemaking to the forefront.

LE CARLINE DI PICCININ DANIELE in Lison-Pramaggiore where the provinces of Venice, Treviso and Pordnenone meet. This area has been producing top quality wine since ancient times. In 1988, Le Carline turned to totally natural cultivation and since 1992 have received certification for their Organic Wines. It is interesting that in the 50’s and 60’s they banned use of chemicals, an action in line with many of the happenings of those years – the Beatles, the Flower People, putting ourselves on the line for changes that would rock the world.
