Paths to Nowhere

I sometimes wonder at the gullibility of the American public. They listen to their media brainwashing them regarding how to keep healthy and thin by eating low fat, low carb meals omitting to inform you that those products are saturated in sugar and salt. After all, they have to have some kind of taste! In addition, however, many products have chemical additives imitating the taste of varied fruits.

Over the years there has been a sharp incline in overweight and sick people. Even youngsters are suffering from obesity. They sit glued to their television sets where every few minutes pictures of snacks, crackers, and even cereals blow up in their faces. Subliminal programming at its best. Pizzas and pretzels and, one of the biggest hoaxes are Snack wells low fat products. I watched an ad of a terribly overweight woman diving into a table loaded with Snack well products whilst a voice said, "yummy I can eat ALL of these because they are low fat". Big mistake!

A few years ago I attended a conference on the Mediterranean Diet in San Francisco. There were many doctors, nutritionists, health providers and press attending. Many subjects were covered espousing the marvelous foods of this diet, fresh vegetables, fruit, olive oil and a glass of wine daily. I stood up in front of all these people and asked, "How can you have a Mediterranean diet here when all of your food is grown on shelves". The mediator stuttered a little and said that they would look into that. Nothing has changed. In 99% of supermarkets especially in California, the food is dead and tasteless, be it packaged or in the produce department. Sorry but 'tis true!

Recently I read an article how a school in an inner city had planted an organic vegetable and herb garden for the children and, inspired, I started one for a school near by. It was an instant success. Not only were the children mesmerized by seeing little green shoots emerging from dark rich soil but as the plants grew, they were able to learn about the timeless renewing by Mother Nature - something not taught in schools any more. As the tomatoes grew bigger, eyes grew rounder, and as the children rubbed their fingers over the herbs and inhaled the pungent aroma, may oohs and aahs were heard. Something as old as the world yet brand new for so many of our children became a wonderful happening! It was also a good time for me to tell them the dangers of chemically grown fruits, vegetables and herbs versus organically grown foods.
