Another variation of kaolin, a water repelling formula, looks helpful in preventing frost damage. By repelling water, it prevents water drops from freezing directly on the plant surface and damaging tissue. Tomatoes have been found to survive low temperatures of 21 F in controlled conditions. It also appears to work on citrus, potato and grape plants.

Kaolin does wash off in rain, so it needs to be applied every 5-10 days. However, if it doesn’t rain enough, you’ll need to wash off your fruit before eating it. My sources say you don’t need to wash it off if you’re going to process your fruit. It can be difficult wash off of soft fruit like grapes.

Have a happy and prosperous New Year.
