Santiam River Resort - Bed and Breakfast of the Month

Each month, I will feature an Oregon Bed and Breakfast or Inn. This will showcase the great places to stay in Oregon as well as things to do, places to see, events to attend, and great food to eat.

This month I sat down with the hosts of the Santiam River Resort Bed and Breakfast in Sweet Home, Pennie and Chuck Farrington. Here is what they had to share:

Sue Barton: The Santiam River Resort Bed and Breakfast was originally the home of a lumber baron. Can you tell me a little about the history of the family and/or the house?

Pennie and Chuck: Built by Santiam Lumber Company in 1936, it served as a party and guest house from 1936 to 1969 when Willamette Industries sold to the first of three private buyers to inhabit the house. Built as a large cabin and later added on to by the lumber barons of WWII, The Santiam Cabin came to be a true Sweet Home landmark.

Coley Wheeler (one of the lumber magnates) used the lodge as a place to invite folks from all over the United States who either purchased a lot of finished lumber, or had timbered land to sell. Coley would wine and dine and fish the river with his guests and they would sign the guest book, and hopefully a contract. This planned usage of the lodge (main house) is evident in the meticulous construction and painstaking attention to detail in the careful selection and use of select native Old growth timber (most of which is impossible to replace today), large living areas and bedrooms, all with exterior and interior entrances and exits.

Re-opened as a river front lodge in 1999, with many refinements, Santiam River Resort blends the ambiance of the 30's with the comforts of the 21st Century!

SB: Tell me about your amenities and the three themed bedrooms.

P&C: It is quiet and secluded. Retreat to an historic 1936 lumber baron's riverfront lodge. Bask in the ambiance of the 30's while luxuriating in 21st century comforts. Let the soothing sound of the South Santiam River carry your stress away. Relax in the heated pool and spa in the spring and summer. Enjoy a good book or choose from over 600 movies on the 64" TV curled up by the floor to ceiling fireplace in the fall and winter. Snacks, your choice of soft drinks, and a yummy breakfast are all included. We specialize in honeymoons, anniversaries, and quiet get-a-ways. It's just like a stay at Mom's (without the nagging). No smoking, children, or pets. Pennie and Chuck look forward to pampering you as their personal guest.
