This is the eighth in a series of monthly articles featuring the Contributing Editors on Suite101.com who hale from the Beaver State, Oregon.
Dawn Weinberger has been the Contributing Editor for Men's Fashion since July of 2001. She writes to us from Northwest Oregon. She lives in and enjoys Hillsboro , which is located in Washington County. Sue Barton: Dawn, tell us about Hillsboro: What's your favorite restaurant, place to visit, thing to do? Dawn Weinberger: Hillsboro is a once-rural, now-suburban community located about 20 miles west of Downtown Portland. Many residents (including my husband) work at Intel or one of several other high tech companies. It's also a multicultural community with a large Spanish-speaking population. Unfortunately, most of the restaurants around here are chains like Red Robin or Applebees, but there are a few hidden gems. Because I love Japanese food, Syun is my favorite. It is hidden in an old library building in Hillsboro's historic district. The food is fresh and flavorful, the service is friendly, and the atmosphere is inviting. Hillsboro is close to Portland and only one hour away from the coast, so the "to-do" options are endless. SB: If you wanted to send somebody from out-of-state a gift that is the essence of Hillsboro, what would it be and why? DW: A bottle of wine from one of the many nearby wineries is a must! My favorite vineyard is Montinore, located in Forest Grove (about 20 minutes from my house). We served their 1999 Pinot Gris and 2000 Muller-Thurgua at our wedding last fall, and our guests keep talking about how great the wine was. SB: How did you get your start writing? DW: I've loved writing as long as I can remember. In fourth grade I was in a young author's class, and continued on from there. In high school I wrote for the student newspaper, then I studied journalism at Western Washington University. SB: Do you write for traditional venues as well as online? DW: Not currently, although I have in the past and my goal is to establish is a flourishing freelance writing career. My favorite non-fashion magazine is Smithsonian, and I hope to one day see my byline in the credits.
