Da Vinci Days - A Renaissance in Oregon

Leonardo daVinci is one of my greatest heroes! Not only did he have artistic and scientific talent, he had the imagination that makes talent worthwhile. His work inspired other artists, and scientists, and dreamers to create even greater works.

In honor of this master, Corvallis, Oregon celebrates each year with daVinci Days!

"This is a unique festival celebrating art, science, and technology. daVinci Days offers a diverse range of activities and events that will surprise and delight the whole family. The theme this year is "Bridges: Building Connections." Come cheer on the kinetic sculpture vehicles as they race through water, mud, and sand, enjoy music performed on three stages, laugh at the antics of renowned street performers, see a traveling exhibit of Leonardo's inventions, admire the imaginative community art project, spend hours in the children's village-and much, much more."

One of the exhibits I want to see most is "Automation and the Night Sky" presented by Heart of the Valley Astronomers, Eugene Astronomical Society, & Friends of Pine Mountain Observatory. This will take a close look at and how automation enables astronomers to better appreciate the skies. What was regarded as fantasy two decades ago is now ubiquitous for even beginners in astronomy. Telescopes, mounts, aiming systems, and researching gear have benefited greatly from what the last decade has wrought in technology aimed at making the amateur astronomer's pursuits more bountiful. Come examine examples of common, high-tech gear and have a fun time learning about our night sky in the process! To read more about my love of the stars and the Pine Mountain Observatory, read My Stars!

In addition to the his astronomic discoveries, daVinci invented numerous machines. A traveling exhibit is donated to the Gallery Association by the IBM Corporation. The exhibition is circulated by the Gallery Association of New York State, Inc, Hamilton, N.Y. It shows "The Inventions of Leonardo da Vinci," and will be at the LaSells Stewart Center, on the Oregon State University Campus. It features sixteen contemporary models of mechanical devices he conceived and designed. The fully operable models in the exhibition have been fabricated from Leonardo's own drawings, which were recorded in notebooks until his death in 1519.
