Beaches for Every Lifestyle

With the annual Rose Parade in Pasadena just days away, those of us who live in Southern California are all too aware of how appealing this area can be to those watching from colder climates! I know that was the case for me when I lived in my native Ohio (upper Midwest to non-U.S. readers). Those long winter nights under piles of blankets are the perfect time to dream of warmer days on a California beach.

The last piece on beaches (May, 2002) was an overview of what's to be had in Orange County. This time, I hope to help you zero in on the best beach for you!

Los Angeles beaches like Malibu and Venice have well-known names. But even some Los Angeles travel agents privately say they think the best beaches are in Orange County! Still, it isn't a case of 'seen one, seen them all.' There are surfing beaches, volleyball beaches, picnic beaches, diving beaches and just plain lounging beaches. There are secluded beaches and very public, crowded beaches. Pick from any of the following to suit your personal style!

Surfing beaches:

Huntington Beach is known as "Surf City," but some of the best surfing can be found in other Orange County towns. Trestles and Calafia beaches in San Clemente are favorites with the locals, as are Salt Creek Beach in Dana Point and the "Wedge" in Newport Beach. Body surfing is popular in Laguna Beach at Thousand Steps Beach and Victoria Beach.

Weekend getaway beaches:

Doheny State Beach in Dana Point and Huntington City Beach in Huntington Beach are the most popular weekend spots for those who seek a low-key camping weekend. At opposite ends of the county, both beaches have a wealth of facilities from snack bars and rest rooms to fire rings, camp sites, picnic tables and some bike paths. Surfing and volleyball are options, but these long strands allow visitors to be noisy or quiet. Find a secluded stretch where you can just chill out or start a game of Frisbee with friends. There's plenty of room for everyone-including company picnics at Doheny!

Picnic beaches:

Besides the big beaches at Doheny and Huntington, you can enjoy a day-long picnic at the state beach in Corona del Mar (the southern section of Newport Beach), at Salt Creek near the Ritz Carlton in Dana Point or at Picnic Beach near Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. All offer walking paths, picnic tables and gorgeous views!
