Live from the Met!

The 1998-1999 season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York is already underway, and it's shaping up to be a good one. This year's schedule includes old favorites like Aida, Carmen, Die Zauberflöte, and new productions of Le Nozze di Figaro and La Traviata, along with more unusual works such as Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades and Khovanshchina, by Modest Mussorgsky. A full list of the season's productions, with dates and links to synopses, is available on The Met's web site.

As usual, the Met has attracted some of the best talent in the business. The new production of Figaro, which debuts later this month, is scheduled to feature Cecilia Bartoli as Cherubino and Bryn Terfel as Figaro. (Having heard Terfel on the John Gardiner recording of Figaro, I personally would love to see this!) Dawn Upshaw is scheduled to appear as Pamina in Die Zauberflöte in December. The casting for any given show is subject to change, of course, and the cast for each production sometimes varies from performance to performance. Check the calendar before you make your reservations.

If you can't make it to New York, never fear; there's always radio and television. "Live from the Met" radio broadcasts begin December 5 with the new production of Figaro, followed in succeeding weeks by Carmen, La Traviata, and Die Zauberflöte. Television broadcasts include Samson et Delila and La Cenerentola (the latter featuring Cecilia Bartoli and Ramon Vargas, who starred in the Houston production that has previously aired on PBS - this should be excellent!). The Met has thoughtfully provided the full schedule on the web site as well.

As you might have guessed, the Met's web site is an extremely useful one. Check it out!
