As these characters do not move the action of the main story in any way, they seem to be there for comic relief -- a quaint "heathen" couple whose presence assures the audience that, if even they are willing to tie the knot, we may safely assume there will be a post-curtain (and certainly pre-nuptially childless) exchange of vows by Minnie and Johnson.
