Now that countertenors are bravely taking on works that were originally written for women –- a film performance of Brian Asawa as Baba the Turk, the Bearded Lady in Stravinsky’s 1951
The Rake's Progress comes to mind –- perhaps we'll see a rise in more subtle, non-satirical portrayals of women by men –- portrayals that consider the needs of the characters more than the sexual insecurities of the actors. I certainly hope so.
