Computer Game Killed My Computer: Buying Computer Games© Reginald Vickers
Once every year or two or three I get a visit from my nephews and nieces from Michigan. This past week Jonnie and Brian, my two teenage nephews, decided to spend some time with me. While their parents and rest of their family went to the local amusement park, it was my privilege to entertain them.
I knew why they were coming and that was OK with me: I had a computer and a computer means games.
Unfortunately for them, my computer is only used for writing, schooling, and playing Spinner.com. The only game that it has seen on its 17 inches has been solitaire. But, as any good shopper, I had a few games collecting dust that I got for little or nothing when some store was having a big sale. I opened the packet and loaded the disk. The CD-ROM began to hum and hum and hum. It stopped and my monitor made a clicking noise and went blank. They looked at me with their mouths wide open. I smile and said, "Oh, it does this all the time." I was lying. It had never done this before. I turned the computer off and back on. The CD-ROM was humming but the monitor was still black. I kicked the computer a few times, knowing that was what corrected the problem at work but nothing. I tried to resuscitate life back into its dark black eyes but to no avail. Games killed my computer. A tear came in my eye. Yet while I was mourning my computer, Jonnie broke the silence, "What are we going to do now?" "Do they not have any respect for the dead!?", I thought to myself (and may have whispered it out loud). This was a serious question since my home is totally void of anything that teens, kids, or babies would find interesting. (Maybe I shouldn't say that. Later when more of the clan came for their annual Mecca, the little ones did find throwing coins and food at the bird and dog a wonderful sport.) A thought popped into my head and I scurried off to the basement. I got into our old trunk and pulled out a few board games. I made the worst choice possible (even though there wasn't much to choose from)- Channel Surfer. I thought to myself, "This looks like a fun game. I wonder why we never play it?" As I pulled the game from the box, I could tell that Jonnie and Brian were about to be sick. I encouraged them with the ever hopeful reply, "Come on, it'll be fun." Deep down I knew I was lying my to myself and they did too. The game dragged on for an hour and we played with the enthusiasm of 12-year-old boy with a Barbie doll. One time I even heard myself threaten them with, "You're going to have fun on this visit."
