What's Hanging On Your Walls

Apr 17, 2001 - © Reginald Vickers

They say you can tell a lot about someone by what they hang on their walls. I believe this is so. One of the careers I have attempted was as an art specialist. I would take art into people's home and help them decide what would complement their decor. I can't say that I made a lot of many doing this, but I did get a lot of great art that hangs throughout our house today. Most of the times these pieces were done by lesser known artists like Vincent Van Gone, Claude Money, and, my favorite, James Abbot Hummer. But since I can't go to each of your households and help you decide what would look best at your house, I will do one better, suggest web sites where you can get great value on your own art collections.

The number rule in art is Buy what you like. Another expression is "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Just as I admit there are some things labeled art that should never have been beheld, there is also some pieces out there that are severely under-appreciated. One of your first stops should be at GUILD.com

For 16 years The GUILD has represented some of the country's finest artists. Every work of art from GUILD artists is selected by their own Art Specialists and juried by their Artistic Advisory Panel. Creativity, craftsmanship and beauty are guaranteed. And using the search is easy. Choose which style of art you're interested in on the left and then you can pick from the medium, theme, or price. Once you find a piece that catches your eye, you can learn more about the artist. This is a great site.

The one true great enjoyment is that I can shop around the world and never leave my office (even though I would rather just go ahead and travel around the world to shop). This especially true for art and crafts of the regions of the world. A great example of this is the site below:

Here you will find a variety of shops with some of the most beautiful original and reproductions pieces available. My favorite shop is Shop of art LASTRUCCI . Shipping can be a little steep, but worth it.

The Internet has opened the world of modern art to many potential patrons who have never stepped foot into a gallery.
