Snoopy & Friends

Even though I have never been much of a book person, there were two kinds that I've always loved: cookbooks and comic books. So in 1969 when "The Peanuts Cookbook" was introduced, I had to be the first kid on my block to own one. I remember the day that I brought it home from school (I had ordered it from a Scholastic Book Club flier). I called up my neighbor Eddie, and begged him to come over and look at the new book that I had just got. I had no idea exactly what was going through him mind, but he closed the door to my bedroom and whispered, "OK, whatcha got?" I hid it behind my back and then pushed it out from my chest; arms out front, elbows locked, like I was showing off a trophy. Eddie looked at it with his head tilted a bit as if to say, "What is it?" Before he could say anything, I bragged, "It's the new Peanut's Cookbook!" Even though Eddie continued to stare with his mouth open, I kept on talking with pride. "I bet I'm the first kid on my street with one of these. I'm going to make everything in this book. And you're going to help. We'll start tonight." I believe if Eddie could have thought of anything else to do, like mow the grass, he would have. But his mind was blank from the shock and, therefore, we began our first creation. It wasn't hard to choose what we were going to make. I mention Snoopy's Root Beer Float and Eddie said he wanted to make Lucy's Lemon Squares. Eddie said he was going to go home if we didn't make what he wanted; so we made Lucy Lemon Squares (I hate to bake alone and besides I had just finished the last bottle of A&W earlier).

I wouldn't say that our first attempt was stellar. They were just a little brown on the bottom, and a little runny on top, but they definitely had potential. And with each attempt, we closed in on perfection. Lucy's Lemon Squares became a big hit and the other neighborhood kids loved them. We would usually make them once a week and usually when my parents' weren't home.

Since those days Snoopy and the whole Peanut Gang have invaded my life many times over and over. I have watched ever movie and TV show they ever made. I use to own every Peanuts comic book but 4. I had a snoopy oxford shirt until I finally wore it thread-bear. Snoopy and Woodsock fill our bedroom and I even still have a few memorabilia. Where do I get all these great treasures? Besides the ones I still have from childhood I have found two web sites that specialize in Peanuts merchandise.
