Completing Your Spring Yard Work While Saving Money

Mar 13, 2001 - © Reginald Vickers

As soon as the calendar changes from February to March, there is hope that spring and summer are just around the corner. The yellow bells are in bloom, the birds are singing, buds are starting to appear on a few trees. Sammy, our Shar-Pei, is excited about getting out and taking her daily walks. There is anticipation that winter is finally gone. And I would believe it, if it wasn't for the 3 feet of snow that is suppose to fall this week.

Actually, we have been teased with a few days of 60-degree weather here in North Carolina. Not only have I spent one day working in the yard, I have even taken my mower in for its yearly check-up so to be ready for the first big mow. One rainy day last week I began making my spring landscaping list. Every year I make this list of all the things that I want to get done in the yard. But this year things are going to be different. This year I may even get to more than one item. This is the year I'm actually going to do the things I have listed. This year I've determined that not only am I going to complete my list, but I'm not eve going to get hurt while doing it.

My first actual act has been digging up the plants that have decided to huddle together during the winter to survive. This includes, as I mentioned above, my yellow bells. Lucky for me, Sammy, the "wonder dog" was there to help. Sammy has many talents, sleeping, eating and the desire to dig. All I have to do is point and she will begin her excavation work. If a root gets in her way, she bites it in half. There is nothing that stops her.

The first task was crossed off with no cuts, no bruises, and no hospital visits. One down and forty-eight more to go. My goal is to complete one task a week. At that rate I'll have all my Spring yard work done by next spring, when I make my list again.

But if I'm going to work in the yard, I might as well save money on my tools, plants, and landscaping. And that's where the Internet comes in.

One of the great sites that I have found for lawn care supplies is found at CornerHardware.com .
