Will the Real Infomercial Please Stand Up!

Lately, our local cable company decided to add to our already extensive list of 12 channels. We are now up to unbelievable 35 top programming channels like SnowTV. (The same fellow owns our cable company, owns the local phone company, is the only service provider allowed in our county, and has the exclusive rights to the name "Bubba". Can we say "monopoly"?) This new addition has changed my life. It use to be that when I had a sleeplessness night all I had to do was turn the TV on to the Farm News and World Report. Before you could say "Sou-ee", I'd be whisked away to far off dreams of Mars's exploration or being caught unprepared on test day with nothing on but a red poke-a-dot tie. Now with all these new channels I have discovered infomercials and of course (nothing new to most of you), the Home Shopping Channel ( http://www.hsn.com/ ) and QVC (http://www.iqvc.com/ ). These infomercials were so appealing that I was going to bed by 6pm and waking up at 1am, just so I could watch the latest programming on the George Foreman Grill. I would flip from channel to channel and catch up to 20 different infomercials at one time. I got so caught up in all of this newness that I began to neglect the rest of my life, including work and, more importantly, (confession time) shopping on the Internet. My next step was to tape the infomercials. Before going to bed each night I would select one of the channels that had frequent infomercials and hit record. This still was not ideal because I could only tape one channel at a time (and besides, after 20 years I still don't know how to use my video recorder).

While watching an infomercial on ChiChi Rodriguez Energy Band, I noticed in the right hand corner the little message- "If you want more information on this product just go to ChiChi Rodriguez Energy Band!" At that moment, my eyes were opened to a new world of "Infomercial shopping"- Internet Infomercials! It should have been obvious. I should have known that even these great infomercial products would also be available on the Internet. Not watching the televised infomercials did have its downside. I would miss the anticipation of the "Teeth Whitening Contest" between Rapid White and the 10hp belt sander, but life is full of give and take!
