Ma Says "Just Send Me A Check!" (and Other Gift Ideals)

Last week, I made the mistake of asking my Momma what she wanted for Mother's Day. This week, it was quite eerie to hear the exact same answer procede from Joyce's mom's lips that came out of my Momma's mouth. This made me wonder if there was some "Offical Mother's Day answer to stupid questions that kids ask." So I took a poll, asking every mother that I came in contact with what she wanted for Mother's Day. I felt like I had visited the "Land of Stepford Mom". Even though the answers all varied ever so slightly, they all contained the same three words or phrases: 1) "Nothing"; 2) "Just visit me" and 3) the idea of "If you don't come and spend time with me, then I want you to give me your life savings".

So, back to Joyce's story. When she asked her mom what she wanted for Mother's day, Joyce's mom (whom we call Ma) answered with the familar, "Nothing, I just want someone to come and spend a little time with me." Now let me explain one thing here, even though Ma is a wonderful, sweet person (not like the stereotypical mother-in-law), she still likes to get her way. She borderlines on being passive-aggressive. She knew that Joyce would have to work next Sunday. So she reminded her mother, "Ma, I have to work next weekend." It was like she heard it for the first time. So Joyce repeated her question, just in case she had forgotten, "So Ma, what do you want for Mother's day?" She sighed real big and repeated her answer with a little twist. "Nothing, just write me a big check and drop it in the mail box so I'll get it by Mother's Day. That'll make me happy." Joyce quickly relented, "Ma, how about if I take you out for breakfast?" Ma smiled and said, "That would be nice. But do I still get the check?"

We all know that Mother's day isn't about the giftsthat are given but about showing appreciation for all that our mothers have done. And there is only one gift that can come close to expressing that- returning the love that they have given to us so many times.

It's hard to write articles about gifts for people who mean so much. Because there is no gift or money that can show my appreciation to my Momma or my Ma. These articles seem to lose their meaning. At least that was what I thought until tonight. I called Momma up tonight to tell her I loved her (this article was putting me in a reflective mode). yet when I told her I was going to spend the day with her on Sunday, she said, "Are you bringing me anything?" OK, so gifts are important. It is the way that we show our true feelings. So if you're stumpedon what token of appreciation to give your mom, your answer is below.
