What Every Mother Wants (But Just Doesn't Know It) - Flowers

May 2, 2000 - © Reginald Vickers

I made my weekly call to my Momma today.

I began the conversation with, "If you could have anything for Mother's Day, what would it be?"

I knew how Momma would answer that question before she said it. "Oh, I don't want you to trouble with buying me anything."

"Oh come on, Momma, what would you want", I pleaded.

"Well, I just can't think of anything", she answered modestly.

I began getting frustrated. "Momma, if you could have anything, anything at all, what would it be."

She continued, "Just knowing you kids come and visit your Momma in my old age just suits me fine."

It was then that I had to reveal my secret of why I was prying. "Let me tell you why I'm asking you. You see Momma, I'm trying to write my article on Mother's Day and need for you to give me a hint. So what should I recommend."

"So whatever I say is what you're going to write for all of the world to see."

"Yeah, something like that." (Momma thinks that everyone who has the Internet reads my articles).

"OK then, I'm ready" (She then begins to talk real loud like it's being broadcast on an old short wave radio). "Hello, my name is Anna Mae and this is what I want for Mother's Day."

I interrupt her and say, "Momma, you don't have to talk that loud. It's not being broadcast." She ignores me and talks even louder.

"I want my husband, Lynwood - he's a good husband and we celebrated our 50th anniversary two months ago- to build me a gazebo out back like he has said he would for the past 10 years. I want my kids to all get along and hug each other. They're all good kids but they're too busy for each other. I really don't want them to buy me anything but if they were going to buy me something, then I would want them to buy me a computer, a printer, and a large monitor so they would talk to me everyday like I'm talking to you now."

She paused. I didn't know how to respond at first. "Momma, so would you like flowers or something for your garden?"

"Oh yes, flowers would be nice."

"OK, Momma, thanks for your help."

She continues with her loud voice, "Thank you all for your time."

"Good-bye, Momma."I said and hung up before she started something else that she wanted to share with the world like inviting them all to the "Ramp Festival in Burnsville".
