Travel Adventures- The Hard Way

When Joyce and I first got married a little over nine years ago, we both had decided that it would be great to quit our jobs and just travel. We had decided that we would go to a new town, get an apartment, get jobs, and enjoy life. See the world. It was a great plan until I started changing it. I am not one to be practical, but this time I tried to be. I thought that it might be safer to get a job that would allow us to travel; that way we would be sure to have money coming in and see the world at the same time. Our first question was, "what could we do that would allow us to travel and get paid to do so?" I'm allergic to elephants, so we couldn't join the circus. Neither one of us can play any instruments so we couldn't join a traveling band. Both of us had careers in social work and we really wanted to do something different. My friend, James, and his brother were traveling the country as portrait photographers. He made it sound like this was the answer to our prayers. We would go to a town, live in a hotel (that the company paid for) for a month or two, then move on to the next town. I would be the photographer and Joyce would be the receptionist. We both would get paid. The only bills would be our food and car payment and entertainment. Everything was paid for.

Two months after we got married, we sold everything and hit the road. We headed to our first stop for training, West Virginia. West Virginia wasn't so bad. There was beautiful countryside and the people were nice. We were there for a short time before we were whisked away to our first assignment, Nebraska. It was one of our goals to go out west and we were heading that direction. I thought Nebraska was the doorway to the Rockies, but I found out that it was actually one huge cornfield. Nebraska was windy and there wasn't much to do. There were two things that we liked about Nebraska. First, the food was great. OK, so I can't think of a second thing. But it wasn't the fault of Nebraska. The problem was that we wanted to see the land, and we had to work from noon to 9pm Tuesday through Sunday, so there wasn't much time to see anything else, except the walls of the hotel and each other.
