Joe Causes Trouble around the Water Cooler

When I pulled into the parking lot at work today, people were beeping their horns and waving. I walked into the office and there was more celebration than when we received a $100,000 grant. People were cheering and screaming while they hung from the rafters. Phones were ringing off the hook. You could hear our reception quickly saying, "Yes, we know. Yes, we're excited about it too. Yes, we think it's great too." When I finally got to my office (after every person stopped me in the hall giving me high five and slapping me on the back), I turned on the computer and went to my emails- 497!! With all the same subject: "Way to go Joe!!!"

What was all the excitement about you ask? Did we get a new muti-million dollar contract? No. Did the builder say he was going to start our new building today and it would be done before this millennium is over (or the next)? No. Did my latest crazy idea come through and turn our operation around? No (but the next one will)! Did Holly change her hair color again? No (at least I don't think so). What could take a mild industrial setting and bring more chaos than a tax audit you ask? Joe Nemechek won his first NASCAR race!!! You might be wondering if I work for Team SABCO or for BellSouth. No, but I can say that I work at a place where the Nemecheks have touched a lot of lives- Transylvania Vocational Service.

5 years ago at Martinsville Speedway, there was this rookie NASCAR driver who gave some people with disabilities the time of day when no one else. These individuals had their picture taken with him and sent him a copy of the picture with a letter of appreciation. He took the time to have the pictures blown up for each person in the photo, autographed, and send the pictures back to them. Every year since then Joe and Andrea Nemechek have given of themselves, as they would spend time with this group of people that no one else would even acknowledge. They have hosted parties for them at Burger King. They have held pizza parties at SABCO race shop. They went out of their way to make a group of individuals feel very special. They have become family. We felt their loss when Joe's brother, John, passed away. We felt their joy when John, their son was born.
