And the winner is.....

© Reginald Vickers

I remember watching one of these 60-minute shows one time and they had this guy on there that was a professional prizewinner. He would spend his mornings with 4 or 5 radios on waiting for the DJ to announce their latest give-away. According to him, he was making $40,000 a year. He had won a boat, stereo, living room outfit, and a year supply of Spam. What a life.

Me, I never win anything off of the radio. But I do try. One of the problems is that they always make their big announcement at the most inopportune time. Normally I'll be waiting by the phone all morning, anticipating the announcer to broadcast, "We are now going to announce the name of the person who must call us in 101 seconds to collect $100 million dollars. That person is Reginald Vickers!" But I wait and wait. I even get up 3 hours earlier than normal just to listen for them to call my name. I carry the phone with me every where I go- waiting, knowing that today is going to be my day. Yet just as I give up and jump in the shower I hear. "Blub... blub... announce...blub... 101... blub... blub... Re....kers." Was that me? Did they call my name?? I call the station and I can't get through. My heart is racing. I keep on trying. I still can't get through. I'm sure they called my name. It had to be me. I start shaking. I want to curse the phone. I frantically hit redial. I know they called my name. Then it starts ringing. And ringing. And ringing. The announcer returns to the radio, "3...2...1, I'm sorry Renee Brinkers, your time is up." Oh, it wasn't me. I look around to see if anyone noticed how crazy I was acting and go back to my shower. You know it wasn't even the $100 million I wanted, even though that would be nice- I just wanted to win something. Even a beanie baby would be nice. OK, maybe not a Beanie Baby, but anything else would suffice. I just want to win something.

Today was my day! On my way home from work, listening to "His Radio" Christian radio station, they announced that the 5th caller would win tickets to see the Carolina Hurricanes and the Atlanta Thrashers. Being from Michigan, hockey is transfused in your blood at your birth. But living in North Carolina, I haven't seen a hockey game in decades. While all this is sinking in, I get a brain fart and realize that my brother's fiancée, Valerie, loves hockey and the four of us would have a blast together! This is meant to be! I now must win!
