It was a normal Saturday afternoon. I had just finished mowing my grass and, therefore, just returned from the hospital (see
Garden Shopping (or Surviving the War of the Roses)). I sat down at the computer and decided to check my e-mail. I usually get about 70-80 junk mails a day and that's what I was expecting. Much to my surprise, 230 emails came crashing through my computer! My first thought was "Someone started the Reginald Vickers fan club." These emails were from complete strangers though, so my next thought was that my neighbor was getting me spammed for setting his woods on fire (see
(Lawn Care the Easy Way)). Fifteen minutes later, another 50 emails came through. I starting checking them out and found out that the majority of these emails where from some group called Something4Nothing. Apparently from reading these emails, I wasn't the only one who was confused. Some people were actually down right upset or should I say rabid. So before I eliminated the emails, I went and un-subscribed to the list. I thought, the audacity of them to clutter my email box with all this junk and taking up my time from reading my important emails like 'Good, Clean Funnies List' (
http://www.gcfl.net ) or 'The Bonehead Daily' (
http://www.egroups.com/list/bonehead )". So I spent the next hour and a half deleting the Something4Nothing postings, grumping all the time about how people shouldn't be allowed to spam others like that. As I was deleting them I started reading some. Besides the hundreds of postings from angry people who were proliferate in using colorful words, the rest of these postings were about shopping deals. These postings reminded me of TheFrugalShopper (TFS). As I started reading some of the posts I learned that TFS had merged with Something4Nothing (S4N). Anyone who was on TFS was now on S4N. It's just that TFS received one post a week and S4N receives 100 posts a minute. I just wasn't prepared for such an overflow of information.
Now, weeks later, Something4Nothing is where I find most of my best deals. Thanks to this group, I have saved hundreds of dollars since I first started receiving postings. The list is full of helpful, friendly people. Because of S4N, during these past few weeks my articles on Internet Shopping are now turning into Internet Bargains.
It is their goal become the "World's Greatest Bargain Discussion Site" (no small feat). Lynn, Sandy, and Marshall, co-moderators for this site, are building more than an information booth for bargains but also an unusual family environment. When someone has a bad day, they might post a little "boohoo" and you'll find people respond. But as with any family, there are times when bickering and complaining are part of the postings. The family atmosphere is something you don't see very often in groups like this. I personally don't know how people have time to read all the posts. I know I don't. Normally what I do is scroll down the digests until I see a URL that interests me, a word that catches my eye, or see my name from one of my fans. It takes me a few minutes to skim through each digest but usually I will always find some way of saving money. If I read each post, I would have to quit my job, have my wife deliver my food to me, while getting only an hour of sleep each night. That's how popular and valuable this site is.
