Shopping Europe - Part I - The British Isles

Mar 9, 1999 - © Reginald Vickers

With a name like Reginald Vickers, you would think that I am of British Royalty from Exter, England. I don't think that is true. I am sure my ancestors are from the British Isles but I haven't been able to trace it that far back. If you know of any Vickers' royalty and that I am in line for an inheritance, please e-mail me at SOFI@Citcom.net. (You can check out the Vickers' genealogy at Vickers Home Page.)

I would love the opportunity to shop in the old country. A minister friend use to go to England and buy antique books. He would bring them back to the US and sell them, paying for his whole trip. He always returned with great adventures and stories. One time he bought a rare set of books from a small shop in England. The set was incomplete, missing one book of the set. The owner of the books had put his name in the front of each copy. A month after his trip, he went to a bookstore in Detroit and there found the copy of the book he was missing. When he opened the book, the same name was in that book as in the set he had just brought back with him from Europe.

Shopping in the British Isles is like shopping in the United States: you could shop all day on the Net and still only have visited a fraction of the shopping sites available. So remember this is a sampling.

Since St. Patty's day is only a few days away, we will begin our trip to Ireland. The Irish Shop has everything from Irish Pub Memorabilia to "wee folk of the Finnian's."

The Irish Edition is an American site that offers Irish merchandise. Where else can you find beef stew with Guinness?

To find duty free shipping to the Americas, check out Celtic Links Shopping Mall. Here you will find links that could lead to many potential shopping sprees. There is also a currency converter to make your transactions easy.

We hop over the Irish Sea to Wales. The Wales-Direct offers connections to Welsh merchandise.

When I think of Shetland, I think of wool and sweaters. As we travel up to the Shetland Island, you can find these items and more at Shetland. While you're here check out the unique traditional and contemporary music.

Tartan Shopping Mall offers many opportunities to find items from Scotland.
