You go to them to find something, but their products are presented front and center with an attractive price. Easy to find - easy to buy. It would take a bit more effort to look within the results of a search, find your site, click and go, look it over and buy. Seems like a long trip to possibly uncertainty. What am I talking about? Search engines and directories. They are the racket and you'd better find a way to get into it or get around it.
Example - Within Yahoo Toys, Games and Hobbies are ads for 2 other toy stores that use Yahoo's store program. The bottom line is - you either pay us directly or indirectly. You pay us! The short list of what not to do if you want to be listed - Don't compete with anything a search engine sells [directly] - Don't spam their database [do not over submit your site] Search engines will let you list more than one page which means you can have pages for all of your products listed. Directories usually list your homepage and that's it. Why do you think search engines will become directories? Less competition from you and your many products. Search engines make money from advertising and that means they must have a steady flow of eyes visiting their websites. Which mean they need your site/s within their database so other people can find or attempt to find what they are looking for. In the beginning search engines where there to serve you, to basically help a person find what they are looking for. Change is a constant in life. Some search engines have moved toward directories to cover the cost of doing business. In a subtle way search engines and directories are using you the online merchant to make money. On a side note - if you don't have a domain name get one. Some directories will not index http://www.isp.com/~yourbusiness because it is not a top level domain. A top level domain is http://www.yourbusiness.com Someone has to pay the bills. It's life. You're using them to make money. They just have the upperhand. As you can see this is a predicament but one that can be solved. Search Engines and directories will also make it more difficult for sites that sell popular products since in the near future, these same sites will compete with what the search engine has to offer. Building a resource that will lead the target audience your main site is the way to go. As you can see there isn't any reason why a search engine or directory won't list a resource unless again it competes with what they have to offer. Go To Page: 1 2
