Used Car Tips8. If buying from a private seller, ask to see the owner's service records. Sometimes the best deals come from private sellers (no dealer mark-ups), but these are the most risky as well. At least, with a dealer, we assume that the car must meet certain minimum standards. 9. Don't be afraid to negotiate. Most dealers expect some haggling over the price, but don't forget about other things like free service or a better warranty. Sometimes these things can sweeten a good deal even more. 10. If anything doesn't feel right, walk away. Many people know intuitively when they are being taken, but they ignore these nagging feelings and go through with the deal anyway. If you sense that something is not right, you are probably right. Follow your instincts. There are other cars out there, believe me. When it comes to used cars, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I didn't get a super deal on my new (to me) car, but I know I got a good, reliable car that will last me many years.
