When the team was reinstated into world cricket in 1992 not many were expecting a performance from the second nation from the African continent. Against all expectations the south Africans turned in a great show and reached the semi-final only to be denied by a ridiculous rain rule to reach the final in their first ever world cup.
The players played exceptionally well under Kepler Wessells and showed the world that they were a team to be reckoned with. The likes of Allan Donald, Jhonty Rhodes and Brian McMillan showed of their talents in the cup and certainly stamped their authority on world cricket. The short span for which South Africa has played one-day cricket has made the job of selecting the two best from the country very easy. In my opinion the two best players from the nation are Allan Donald and Jhonty Rhodes. Allan Donald was the fastest bowler in the world in the early 90's. His greatest asset is his pace and its variation his control over the line and length of his deliveries has made him even more dangerous for opposing batsmen. Injury plagued him for the first three years of his career and then a county contract forced him to play less cricket on the international scene. None the less his great wicket ability has given him one of the best strike rates in the world. He is truly one of the best ever to have played from South Africa. Jhonty Rhodes in my opinion is the best fielder to have fielded on the field on the international stage. His unbelievable athletic ability and agility has made him the most feared fielder in world cricket. Batsmen think twice before pinching a cheeky single to him. His great fielding ability has made him into a run saving machine, who saves at Least 20 to 30 runs a game. He runs hard between wickets and thus gives his team extra runs to play with. His run out of Inzimam-ul-haq in the 92 world cup will be etched in the memory of cricket lovers for a long time to come. Other than the two players mentioned above some other players in the team are all set to become great ones in the future. Some examples of such players are Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock and Mark Boucher. These players have certainly performed well in their careers so far and just need to be relied upon to a greater extent by their team. South Africa have failed to win the world cup in three attempts but the way they play the game they are sure to win not one but many. Go To Page: 1 2
