The Australian team recently shattered the world record of winning the most one-day matches in a row. The victories don't indicate a burst recent form but is actually a continuation of their virtual dominance of world cricket. The team qualified for the 1996 & 1999 World Cup finals and hence managed to win the latest one in a convincing fashion.
The ability of Australian team to win on foreign soil has given the team an edge over all the others, The Aussies have won ODI tournaments everywhere in the last 10 years, from Mumbai to Sharjah, from Trinidad to Johannesburg and from Lords to MCG. They have virtually dominated world cricket with few close competitors. A strong cricketing domestic setup has helped Australian Cricket to grow and prosper. With reserve players playing county cricket in its self indicates the class in which Australian cricketers are held. Players like Shane Lee and Andrew Symonds have been playing county cricket for a number of years but made their debut for Australia only this year. The provision of players who already have the experience of playing for counties has helped the team to skip the transitional period which most teams undergo when senior players retire. With new comers already having the experience of international cricket the team might never have to undergo such a time which has wrecked havoc with criketing giants like West Indies, after legends like Richardson Richards and Haynes retired. Another aspect of their game is the critical mixture of technological advancement and talent that they have achieved. Tactically also their progress has been astounding, having different teams for ODI's and test matches not only lessened the pressure on the players but also enhanced their abilities on the ground. The fielding of the Aussies is of the highest standard and the intensity with which they play the game has also attracted foreign audiences to watch and enjoy their performances. The ability to keep cool and not crack under pressure has helped the Australians to be leaps and bounds ahead of their closest rivals, South Africa and Pakistan. The way the team came from being down and out at one stage to win he '99 WC and in doing so winning six straight matches shows the doggedness of the men from down under. To me the most important factor which has contributed to the success of the Aussies has been the fact that they never forget what they have come for. Each player believes in the moral that no one is bigger than the game itself. Everyone wants to give more to the game than to taking from it. Wearing old styled caps for the last test match of the millenium shows the respect they have for past legends and the game they are proud to play. Go To Page: 1 2
