Combining Mixed Media with Oil Painting

I have even gone so far as to burn holes into the canvas of a painting in order to integrate some mixed media. In A Manifold of Events I burned a series of holes that became a design within the piece, using some of the holes to tie on a pocket made out of fabric. The pocket in turn became a holding place for some silk flowers that form that outermost dimension of this multi-layered piece.

As you can see just by the few examples I have given of my own work, it is entirely possible to create thought evoking pieces through a combination of oil painting and mixed media. Although my pieces use a lot of fabric and collage, even just small amounts can add intrigue to an oil painting.

Next week's article will discuss the importance of layering techniques in oil painting.
