Get Outta Town!

Hey, don't get me wrong, Ohio is great. But sometimes you've just gotta' get away, right? Follow your wandering nose and enjoy the trip. Below, I've noted some great places you can visit virtually first, then pack your bags. Most are just over the edge of Ohio's state line. And away we go...

Oh, Canada
One hop across the big pond (Lake Erie, of course) and you're there. Mary Alward, Travel Center Manager, posts weekly articles at Canadian Tourism, Travel, and Culture, at http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/5086
One of my favorite articles there is about Santa's summer getaway, in Ontario. Before you visit Mary's place, be warned: she always includes a few "extras" in her articles, and this one packs a lot calories--several delicious holiday recipes are at the bottom of this piece. Talk about a sweet ending!

Kentucky
Land of beautiful horses and fast women? Nah. Kentucky doesn't deserve the jokes about backward country folk. It's a most beautiful place, filled with people who are genteel and gracious. One of my all-time favorite family vacations was a trip to several of Lexington's horse farms. Of course, if you go, you'll come home pining for some more of that famous Kentucky cuisine. Mint Juleps and Derby Pie are both almost too good to share!

Get a taste of what the state has to offer both travelers and diners. First, go to http://www.kytourism.com/main.asp and then hit http://kentuckykitchen.com/ . Food adventurers will enjoy http://www.insiders.com/lexington-ky/sb-... where you can learn about hot browns, burgoo, and other good things to eat in the Bluegrass State.

Pennsylvania, our neighbor to the east
The state license plates once read, "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania" and I think that's true. Our neighbor to the east is full of friendly places to see and people to meet. Hershey is a fine spot for a family vacation. How could you go wrong in a theme park where the theme is CHOCOLATE? Check it out at http://www.hersheypark.com/

When all those cocoa beans conspire to broaden your girth, Pennsylvania offers some great trails (with even greater hills) where you can work it off. Presque Island, located on Lake Erie's shore, is a recurving sand spit, and has the only surf beach in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Its geological and biological diversity, historical significance, and rich bird-watching opportunities make it a favorite with visitors.

Visit Presque Island and all of Pennsylvania's State Parks at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/i... or call 888-PA-PARKS.
