THE GAME is next week.
Yes, there's a game this week. Saturday the Bucks take on Illinois. It's important. But it's not THE GAME. Any player, coach, or fan who says his/her head is "completely" in this week's game is, to some extent, lying. THE GAME IS NEXT WEEK. We're going to Ann Arbor. You know how get to Ann Arbor? Head north till you smell it, then west till you step in it. That's how you get to Ann Arbor. I know. I've never been there, but I grew up in Columbus, and EVERYONE there knows that's how you get to Ann Arbor. You might say there's a bit of a rivalry between the Bucks and … (shudder!) that team up north. Or you could more accurately say it's the rivalry of all rivalries. It is not diminished by either team's record or ranking. What's Columbus like on game day? Heh-heh-heh. Let me tell you. The bars open at 8 a.m. on THE GAME day. It's the only day all year that even the most hormonal among the college crowd are focused, totally, on THE GAME. For alumni, getting a babysitter for the day of THE GAME is like getting a babysitter for New Year's Eve: It's tough, and it's important. Wise sitters raise their rates. Wise parents tip well. It's THE GAME, after all. If you're not part of a long scarlet and gray history, you may think I'm just crazy. (I am; it's part of the territory when you grow up under the shade of Buckeye trees.) Take heart; you can learn this stuff rather quickly. Bone up on Buckeye-isms below. Put on your scarlet and gray. And whenever you're at a loss for words, try these: GO BUCKS! FOR FANS ONLY: http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.fansonly.co... What a great site! The Ohio State University Athletic Association has a whole lot of what Buckeye fans want--highlights, scores, previews, schedules, rosters, history, stats, tickets, and links, links, links. It's way, way more than football, but … right now, we're talking football. So let's get back to THE GAME and OSU football tradition. Buckeyes, not Tigers Ohio State sports teams were to wear orange and black, the school decided in 1878. When it found out that Princeton had chosen the same colors, the Buckeyes picked scarlet and gray. And the winner in the "Dumb Questions Category"is: "Are those marijuana leaves on their helmets?" Answer: NO! They're BUCKEYE leaves, from BUCKEYE trees, and yes, we know what they look like. Get over it. Woody Hayes and his assistants began the tradition of giving the decals to players for gutsy play. So the players with many leaves on their helmets are the really tough Buckeyes. (In other words, THEY EAT WOLVERINES FOR BREAKFAST.) Go To Page: 1 2
