You Can Stop, Shop, Even Sleep, at Grandpa's Cheese Barn

I've been traveling I-71 between Columbus and Cleveland for years, seeing the signs for Grandpa's Cheese Barn, smiling at the name and wondering about the place. Only recently did I stop in.

I found out that Grandpa is a master of understatement. The place really ought to be called "Grandpa's lovely country store stuffed full of homey foods, gifts, candies and ice-cream." I suppose that's too long for even a large billboard.

Just a few car lengths from the freeway exit, Grandpa's spread also includes two Bed & Breakfast suites. I've got to hand it to Grandpa; he's one of those truth-in-advertising types. The B&B brochure lists the rooms as "500 feet from I-71 in Ashland County." And they are. Though the setting is none too picturesque, the décor is quaint and the rooms are clean. So while I can't call this a getaway, I do admit there's a certain lure to a clean bed and Jacuzzi in a room so close to the store I can see the homemade ice cream flavors of the day from the lace-curtained windows. Grandpa's suites come with a basketful of goodies from the store; both suites are non-smoking rooms, too.

If you're looking for a place along I-71 to stretch your legs, or even stretch out, Grandpa's beats your average rest stop hands-down. Oh yes, I almost forgot. They do have cheese.
