Good Sports

Billed as "Ohio's online event and racing guide," http://www.ohiooutside.com delivers a site full of mountain biking, road racing, touring, hiking, kayaking and canoeing events, an outstanding list of clubs, and lists race results when they are available. The site also offers a quite comprehensive list of outfitters in Ohio, so you can get the gear you need, and spend your money right here at home, to boot.

Making a Good Difference

Speaking of great events, I have to push (heh, heh) the upcoming Pedal w/Pete event. Actually, its official name is the "Pedal to Make a Difference," and it does.
Held in Kent each May (this year it's May 19), the race raises money for research into treatments and (let's hope) a cure cerebral palsy.

What's new this year is the addition of a hike-a-thon, in two locations: Fred Fuller Park in Kent, and Hudson Springs Park in (you guessed ...) Hudson. Once again, an awesome Cannondale Bike will be raffled off on the day of the event. Raffle tickets are $5/each; up your chances with 5 for $20. The bike's retail value is $1134. It's red -- no, let me elaborate -- it's VIPER red with yellow and black decals.

Founded by Pete Zeidner, a Kent State University alum who was born with CP, the event draws riders of all speeds, great prizes, and a lot of good spirits. The bike route is just hilly enough to be interesting, as it rolls through some of Kent's historic neighborhoods, along the Stow-Kent bike route, and through some of the lush and lovely streets of Silver Lakes. Both hiking routes are beautiful - in Kent, you'll wander along the winding Cuyahoga; in Hudson, you'll have lake views throughout the walk and strategically-situated, shaded benches to rest your legs while your eyes rest on the water.

CP is a crippling neurological condition that occurs during pregnancy, labor, or after birth, damaging the central nervous system. It limits movement, speech, and joy in life. In December 2000, the Pedal with Pete Foundation made a $20,000 grant to Dr. Leland Albright, Chief of the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, to continue working toward the cure and prevention of CP. The grant came largely in part to last year's Pedal with Pete event. It makes a difference, all right.

Register to ride, hike, volunteer, or learn more about current work toward the cure, call 800-304-PETE or go to http://www.pedalwithpete.com. Push on!
