Wet, Wild SeaWorld OHIO

UPDATE, May 2001:Six Flags purchased SeaWorld earlier this year. The entire park has been incorporated - Marine theme and educational focus intact - into "SIX FLAGS WORLDS OF ADVENTURE." Although the star, Shamu, went south to another SeaWorld location, a dolphin show was added by the Six Flags staff. The Six Flags folks say it's still a whale of a deal; I have to agree, visitors get a LOT for their single admission price.

Want to learn how to brew beer, train birds of prey, and dive for pearls in one day? No sweat – you can do it all, and be back home in time for dinner. Where? At SeaWorld Adventure Park in Aurora. If you haven’t been there for a few years, you might be surprised at he variety of sites you’ll see at the local park. SeaWorld’s Cleveland location opened in 1970, the second of four SeaWorld parks, and the 90-acre facility offers plenty of activities, even for those who insist on staying dry. While Shamu gets the lion’s share of the limelight, there are five other live shows, each shown several times daily, that don’t feature the killer whale. For example, the “Wild Wings” show features some of the world’s largest and most dangerous birds performing incredible feats. The “All Star Mutts” show stages an Olympic-style competition between dogs, cats, ducks and even a pig. All of the performing “mutts” (cats included) have been rescued from local animal shelters and trained by SeaWorld’s professional staff. If you like to participate rather than just watch, take a tour. Several guided specialty tours are offered daily, including a Bird Lovers’ Tour. Visitors can also get an insider’s look at the art and science of beer making at the “Budweiser Beer School,” open daily.

Follow these “Do’s and Don’ts” to enjoy a day at SeaWorld - Do go during the week, or on weekends before noon, to avoid crowds. - Don’t take a picnic lunch unless you want to eat it in the parking lot, where a large tent shades the public picnic area (no coolers are allowed in the park - Do plan to shop for those hard-to-buy-for folks on your holiday list; especially if someone you know decorates in a nautical theme. High-quality art and gift items such as lighthouses, pirate paraphernalia, and all things dolphin and whale-related are available at many gift shops in the park. - Don’t take a stroller for older children unless they REALLY need one. Stroller rentals are available at the park, but frankly, there’s so much for children to see and do, if you take a stroller you’re likely to find you’re just getting them in and out of the stroller all day.

There's been no hue or cry in Ohio, at least not in the last ten years, about SeaWorld's animals. That may be due, in part, to the fact that all three of the Orcas (or "Killer Whales") in the SeaWorl ...
